The Morrison-McCall Reading Test, a quick reading level test, assesses children’s reading abilities, can be particularly helpful for parents for several reasons:

  1. Understanding Reading Levels: The test provides a clear indication of a child’s reading level and proficiency. This helps parents gauge where their child stands in terms of reading skills and whether they are meeting expected milestones for their age or grade level.
  2. Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses: By revealing specific areas where a child excels or struggles, the test helps parents identify strengths and weaknesses in their child’s reading abilities. This insight allows parents to focus their support on areas needing improvement or to encourage and further develop areas where the child is already strong.
  3. Informed Support: With the test results, parents can make more informed decisions about the types of reading materials or interventions that might benefit their child. For example, if a child struggles with comprehension, parents might seek out resources or activities that focus on improving understanding and analysis of texts.
  4. Effective Communication with Educators: Test results can serve as a valuable tool for discussing a child’s reading progress with teachers and educators. This can help parents and teachers work together to create a tailored plan to support the child’s reading development.
  5. Tracking Progress: Regular use of the test can help parents track their child’s reading progress over time. This ongoing assessment provides a way to measure growth and adjust reading strategies as needed.
  6. Setting Realistic Goals: Understanding a child’s reading level helps parents set realistic goals for improvement and celebrate achievements. This can also motivate children by showing them tangible evidence of their progress.
  7. Enhancing Reading Enjoyment: Knowing where a child stands in their reading development allows parents to provide appropriate reading materials that match their child’s level, which can enhance their reading experience and foster a love of reading. quick reading level test
  8. Building Confidence: Accurate assessment of reading skills can help parents recognize and support their child’s efforts and achievements, which can build their confidence and encourage a positive attitude towards reading.

In summary, the Morrison-McCall Reading Test helps parents gain a clearer understanding of their child’s reading abilities, enabling them to provide better support and make more informed decisions about their child’s educational needs.

Directions

Ask your child to spell/write these words on paper. Stop after 4 consecutive errors. Before the 4 incorrect in a row, the last word spelled correctly is the child’s approximate reading level decoding-wise. Comprehension is another story!  🙂

GL (Grade Level) refers to grade and month; for example, 1.5 is the fifth month of grade 1.

Say the word, say it in a sentence, and repeat the word. Good Luck!

The scoring scale attached to the sentences below is the universal scale for all 8 of the Morrison-McCall Spelling Lists.
