My little purple classroom in the 2025/26 school year!

About Me

Welcome, and thank you for being here.

The purpose of this website is to support parents, teachers, and caregivers in helping children learn to read and write with confidence. This site has been a labor of love since May 2012, and over the years, I have continually updated it with new tips, strategies, and instructional methods as research and best practices evolve.

My goal is to make the science of reading accessible, practical, and easy to use for anyone working with young learners—whether at home, in the classroom, or in a specialized instructional setting.

A Global Literacy Community

Over time, this website has grown far beyond what I ever imagined. It has received nearly 13 million page views from educators and families in more than 168 countries, reflecting a shared commitment around the world to strong, evidence-based literacy instruction.

One of the greatest privileges of maintaining this site is hearing directly from the people who use it. I regularly receive emails from professors, classroom teachers, reading specialists, tutors, and parents, and I make every effort to personally respond to questions and requests for guidance.

It is truly a privilege to help, and I sincerely appreciate the trust you place in my experience and expertise.

What You’ll Find on This Site

In addition to my original teaching explanations and instructional guidance, I have carefully curated high-quality, free literacy resources from across the web. These include:

All recommended resources are selected to support effective, engaging literacy instruction while saving educators and families valuable time.

Grounded in the Science of Reading

All teaching strategies and instructional recommendations shared on this website are grounded in the science of reading. You can feel confident that the methods presented here are research-based, developmentally appropriate, and designed to build strong foundational reading and writing skills.

My focus is always on clarity, practical application, and helping educators understand why a strategy works—not just how to use it.

Professional Background

I have been a certified teacher in the Boston, Massachusetts area since May 1990. Over the decades, I have had the privilege of helping thousands of children learn to read, working across a wide range of abilities, learning styles, and instructional needs.

This classroom experience informs everything I share on this site—from explanations of phonics and spelling rules to guidance on teaching complex or challenging concepts in clear, supportive ways.

Thank You!

Thank you for visiting, exploring the resources, and being part of this literacy-focused community. Whether you are a parent, educator, or caregiver, I hope you find support, clarity, and confidence here as you help children become skilled, joyful readers.
